Do I need to submit a tax return?

You are NOT required to file a tax return if your income for the tax year is not above the R500 000 threshold and if you meet the following requirements:

  • Your remuneration is paid from one employer (single source);
  • You have no car or travel allowance, a company car fringe benefit, this is considered additional income;
  • Your employees tax (PAYE) has been deducted/withheld;
  • You did not earn any other additional income such as rentals, dividends, etc;
  • You don’t earn interest exceeding applicable thresholds (R 23 800 p.a for natural persons under 65 years, R 34 500 p.a for persons over 65 years of age); and
  • No other deductions to claim from SARS

There is a useful question set you can answer on the SARS website if you are still unsure whether you need to submit or not.
