Submitting your tax return

Below is a list of possible documents needed when completing your tax return. Your tax return is also known as a ITR12 on Efiling.

  • IRP5/IT3(a) from your employer or pension fund
  • Medical scheme contributions certificates and receipts
  • Tax certificates for investment income IT3(b).
  • Tax-free Investments certificate(s) IT3(s)
  • Retirement annuity fund contributions certificates
  • If you received a travel allowance or a fringe benefit for an employer provided vehicle, you must have a logbook to claim the business travel deductions
  • Any information pertaining to any Capital Gain events in the year of assessment
  • Completed confirmation of diagnosis of disability form (ITR-DD) if you want to claim any disability expenses
  • Financial statements (e.g. for business income)

You will use the documents mentioned above, as well as any other applicable documentations, when completing your tax return on Efiling. You will only need to provide this to SARS in the event of them selecting you for verification.

Verification is a process where SARS validates your tax return input to the relevant, appropriate supporting documentation.

It is important to also note that you must keep all your supporting documents safely for a period of FIVE years from the date of submission, should SARS require them in future.
